So Much Change, In So Little Time
-Alexandra Street
Looking back and reading my professional goal statement I wrote in September of 2010 was very interesting to me. At the time my three main goals were to obtain a Master's degree to become a head coach, develop my leadership and coaching skills and lastly to take advantage of online learning so I could continue to work. It has been less than two years since I wrote this essay and so much has changed, professionally and personally.
In 2008 when I started my educational journey of receiving my Master's, I worked a lot, was not married and had no children. Now, in 2012, I no longer work and I am married with a baby girl. I know where I am now is where I wanted to eventually be, but I had no idea it would happen so quickly. I was married in 2010, had a baby in 2011 and then stopped working in 2012. All three events have been life changing.
When I look back at my goals in 2010, I feel I am in a very different place now. The main goal stays the same of wanting to obtain my Master's degree. But it seems my other goals are different now. Having my own family has changed my direction of my career. I currently still coach field hockey, but on an entirely different level. I work with middle school and high school athletes and it has rejuvenated my love for coaching. With the courses I have taken in the MEAD program I am still able to apply this knowledge, but from a different angle.
I feel blessed and fortunate that I am able to stay home with our baby girl. Although my career path has shifted, as well as my personally life, I never knew I could be this happy. Taking the time to reevaluate my professional goals has enlightened me to how change can happen quickly and reminds me to embrace it when it comes.
